The flu had other plans.

Sometimes the best thing you can do when you’re sick is step away from the screen and let your brain rest instead of forcing ideas onto a page. The funny thing is, when you build your content well, it keeps working even when you’re not.

That’s something I’ve been thinking about a lot lately. Not just because I was sick, but because I’m deep in the editing phase of my book right now.

Yes, the book is still happening. All the words are written. Now I’m in substantive editing with my editor, the wonderful AJ Harper.

AJ’s job isn’t to change what I’m saying. The ideas and words are still mine. But she helps make sure the book actually serves the reader. She’s the one gently reminding me when I repeat myself, when I lean too hard on punctuation (apparently I really love colons), and when an idea needs to be clearer.

Her core philosophy is “A book isn’t about something. It’s for someone.”

This book I’m writing is for you.

I originally hoped to release it this year. But at some point, I realized rushing the timeline wouldn’t serve the people I’m writing it for. I get one shot to make this book right. So I pushed the release six months.

That felt like the least I could do.

My goal with this book isn’t just to explain the COSE™ framework. I want to show you what it looks like in practice as I build my own creator ecosystem.

Create with structure.
Organize for repurposing.
Share with intention.
Expand for reach and revenue.

Every step of my own work is part of that process and one part of the framework has been especially on my mind lately: organize for repurposing.

Because once you start looking closely at how content moves across the internet, something strange becomes obvious. Most content isn’t actually reused, it’s rewritten.

The rewriting cycle

Think about how most recipes move across the internet.

A creator writes a blog post. Someone summarizes it for social media. Someone else adapts it into a video. A platform reformats it into its own structure, and another platform extracts pieces of it for search results. At every step, the same content is interpreted again and again. Instead of moving cleanly through systems, it gets translated repeatedly, which is why so much effort online feels duplicated. Creators feel it first, but they’re not the only ones dealing with it.

The moment your blog becomes a business

If you’ve advanced your blogging business beyond just yourself, you likely have a content team now.

Maybe it’s a VA uploading recipes, someone helping with photography or editing, someone managing Pinterest or social media, or developers and SEO specialists helping behind the scenes. The moment multiple people touch your content, something important changes: content stops being a personal workflow and becomes infrastructure.

Infrastructure needs structure. Without it, every person on the team ends up reinventing the same work in slightly different ways. Descriptions get rewritten, instructions get reformatted, metadata gets added inconsistently, and content gets copied from place to place. The system itself was never designed for reuse.

This isn’t just for creators

The exact same thing happens inside companies.

Content teams rewrite the same product descriptions across multiple channels, marketing teams rewrite the same explanations for every campaign, and product teams rewrite documentation every time a feature launches. Everyone is working from the same information, but without structured content that information has to be recreated every time it moves. Instead of flowing through systems, content becomes a constant rewriting project, and the bigger the organization gets, the more expensive that cycle becomes.

Creators just feel it sooner.

Structure changes how content moves

Structured content changes the model. Instead of writing everything as a single block of text, the content is organized into meaningful pieces, however those pieces mean for you. Each piece becomes data that systems can understand. When that happens, the same content can move across platforms without being rewritten every time.

If your content is food, your recipe can appear on your website, a cooking app, a search result, or a voice assistant without someone manually reformatting it. The content is still yours.

But it’s now designed to travel.

Meet Gus

Gus is a zillennial food creator from North Carolina.

That’s not actually his real name. People started calling him ‘Gus’ when he was a kid, and it just stuck, in a way that nicknames have no rhyme or reason; they just exist.

He grew up crabbing with his family and spending summers in the Outer Banks, surrounded by the kind of coastal food that shows up around picnic tables and paper plates: fried seafood, hushpuppies, crab boils.

A few years ago, he was diagnosed with celiac disease, so he started doing what many creators do when life shifts: he began recreating the food he grew up eating. Gluten-free hushpuppies, crab cakes that still hold together, fried shrimp with a coating that actually crunches. Most people discovered him on TikTok at @OuterBanksGus, where he films the process of figuring those recipes out.

Recently, he also started a Substack called Crab Pots & Cornmeal, where he shares more of the behind-the-scenes thinking behind his recipes and the experiments that lead to them. Like many creators, Gus didn’t set out to build a content system. He just wanted his recipes to work everywhere his audience found him.

What Gus started doing differently

At first, Gus handled his content the way most creators do. Every recipe he created slowly turned into multiple versions of the same thing: a blog post, a TikTok caption, a newsletter explanation, and a handful of social posts. The information was the same each time, but the format kept changing, so he found himself rewriting the same ideas again and again.

Over time, he realized he needed to organize his content better. Each recipe lived as a single block of text that had to be reshaped every time it moved somewhere new.

So Gus tried something different. Instead of writing everything as one long story, he began organizing his recipes into clear parts before publishing them: ingredients, instructions, substitutions, cooking tips, and short explanations of why the recipe worked.

Once those pieces existed, the same recipe could show up in different places without being rewritten. The structured recipe powered his website, a short tip became a TikTok clip, the story behind the dish became a Substack post, and a substitution tip turned into a social caption.

Nothing about the recipe itself changed. What changed was how the content was organized.

Instead of rewriting the same information over and over, Gus started assembling it from pieces that already existed.

That shift is the difference between publishing content and building a content library. When your content is organized for reuse, every new piece you create becomes something you can use again later.

Why this matters right now

Food creators are already seeing this shift. Recipe platforms ingest structured recipes, search engines pull structured fields into results, and apps are building new cooking experiences using creator content. Often, creators don’t even realize their content is being interpreted this way because it happens behind the scenes.

Structured content already shapes how recipes move across platforms, but creators should understand how that system works. Because once you understand it, you stop rewriting your content.

Meet Lex

Lex runs a food blog centered on weeknight meals for working parents. Her recipes are practical, thoughtful, and deeply reliable. She publishes twice a week, sends a newsletter every Friday, and is super consistent and present across platforms.

From the outside, her business looks stable. From the inside, she feels tied to it like a prisoner.

Last summer, she took three weeks off to travel with her family. Nothing dramatic happened. No algorithm warning. No catastrophic drop. But traffic softened. Email growth stalled. A brand conversation cooled.

Just enough to notice.

When she returned, she increased her output. More posts. More short-form video. More reminders that she was still there.

The numbers recovered. The tension didn’t.

What Lex was experiencing was exposure. Her visibility relied on her actively working on it. When the activity paused, so did the lift.

And lift that depends entirely on motion will always require more motion. Physics has been clear about this for centuries. Newton covered it in the 1600s. We’re just rebranding it as content strategy.

Output vs. infrastructure

Her content performed well when it was new. It circulated, generated engagement, and then settled into her archive. There was no intentional pathway guiding readers from older work to newer pieces. No built-in mechanism for resurfacing recipes seasonally. No connective thread that allowed her archive to build on itself.

The content existed. It was good. It was useful.

But it wasn’t designed to support itself.

Consistency was filling the gap where structure should have been.

When one pillar carries the entire system, fatigue follows.

A quiet diagnostic

If you stopped publishing for 30 days, what would continue working for you?

Would your most popular recipes still surface in search? Would older posts clearly connect to newer ones? Would your email list continue to grow because your entry points remain visible and relevant?

Or would everything feel paused, waiting for you to press play again?

There’s no judgment in the answer. But the answer tells you whether you’re operating on momentum or infrastructure.

Durability isn’t measured in posts per week. It’s measured in what still functions when you log off.

Why “just keep posting” eventually stops working

Momentum can carry a creator through several growth seasons. It builds awareness. It drives spikes. It can feel like progress.

But without structure underneath it, momentum becomes maintenance.

When traffic dips, many creators increase frequency. When engagement fluctuates, they pivot formats. When partnerships slow, they promise themselves they’ll “just stay consistent.”

It starts to feel less like strategy and more like cardio.

Search visibility depends on whether platforms can clearly understand what your content is. Repurposing depends on organization. Cross-platform distribution depends on intentional formatting. When those foundations are thin, sharing absorbs the strain.

Consistency becomes preservation instead of expansion.

And preservation is just exhausting.

What sustained visibility feels like

The creators who experience stability describe something different. They still publish. They still evolve. They still pay attention to platforms.

But they don’t feel punished for resting.

Their archive supports discovery long after publication. Their content connects clearly across platforms. Partnerships feel aligned rather than reactive. Email growth is supported by work published months ago.

Consistency amplifies their system.

It doesn’t replace it.

There’s a calm that comes from that shift. The kind of calm that doesn’t spike every time a platform updates or a new format trends. We’ve lived through enough platform cycles to know that surface mechanics change. Underlying structure doesn’t.

Durability has a different feel than momentum. It’s steadier.

Then ask:

Where does each of those pieces lead?
What related work is clearly connected?
If you stopped publishing for one month, what would continue functioning without intervention?

These questions shift the focus from discipline to design.

They also reveal where your system is already working, and where it needs reinforcement.

And across all of it, I’ve watched the same pattern repeat, regardless of platform, audience, or scale.

Food content rarely fails with a loud crash.

More often, it fades. A recipe performs once, then quietly disappears. A video finds an audience, but nothing builds on it. A post does “well,” yet leaves no trace of where it should lead next. The work continues, the effort remains, but the momentum slips out of view.

Why that matters (especially for creators)

So often, content gets treated like a byproduct:

• something to post

• something to fill a slot

• something to support real goals like traffic, revenue, or growth

But when content is treated as secondary, everything built on top of it starts to wobble.

UX decisions get disconnected, monetization feels bolted on, and platforms feel unpredictable instead of understandable.

When content is the purpose, structure starts to make sense.
So does distribution.
So does longevity.

What this looks like in your work

When creators struggle, it’s rarely because they aren’t trying hard enough.

Meet Koda

Koda lives in Lawrenceville, Pittsburgh.

He’s into video games, cooking, and systems, though he didn’t think of it that way when he started. His niche is simple and obsessive in the best way: he goes to Michelin-star restaurants, studies a dish, then recreates it at home.

Taste it. Then make it.

His blog is called Second Seating, a place where restaurant experiences turn into practical, repeatable home cooking. His YouTube channel documents the process. His Pinterest does especially well because people save the steps, not just the finished plate.

For eight months in a row, Koda hit his revenue goal.

That’s when he quit his marketing job and went full-time. The income was steady. The workflow was predictable. The content no longer relied on one platform having a good week.

That wasn’t always true.

When Posting Everywhere Stopped Working

Early on, Koda posted everywhere.

Every video went to multiple platforms. Every recipe was pushed out in as many formats as possible. It felt responsible, like he was increasing his odds.

One video, an at-home take on a tasting-menu pasta, performed especially well. People asked for follow-ups. Someone commented, “Can you do the sauce next?”

But a few weeks later, the questions changed.

“Did you ever post that again?”
“I can’t find the mushroom one.”
“Where do I start with your recipes?”

Koda hadn’t stopped creating.
But his content didn’t have a clear path forward.

What Koda Actually Changed

Koda didn’t solve this by posting more. He solved it by redesigning how his content moved.

Here’s what he did, specifically:

• He decided that YouTube was where full recreations and technique lived. Long-form, process-heavy, no shortcuts.

• He redesigned Pinterest to act as a reference layer: clear steps, consistent naming, and pins that pointed back to related recipes, not just the latest one.

• On his blog, Second Seating, he made sure every new recipe:

  • referenced a previous restaurant visit

  • linked to at least two related dishes

  • clearly stated what kind of meal it was for (weeknight, project cooking, special occasion)

He stopped treating the moment something went live as the finish line. From there, the work continued. Each piece was connected to what came before it and pointed clearly to what came next.

This is the heart of the COSE™ pillar Share with Intention.

Why This Works

Koda’s content holds together because it’s designed to.

Not everything needs to be everywhere.
But everything needs a role. When content is designed to move, it can resurface, connect, and compound. When it isn’t, it depends on timing and luck.

Most creators don’t need new ideas.

They need clearer paths for the ideas they already have.

Try This (15 minutes)

Pick one recipe or video that should have gone further.

Then answer these questions in writing:

• What platform was this actually made for?

• What should someone do after they consume it?

• What other piece of your content should it point to?

If the answer is “nothing,” that’s a design gap. The good news is that design gaps are fixable.

Meet Ari

Ari lives in Tampa, Florida.

Before she ever had an email list, she had a Fandom account.

It was called Second Verse Club, a space where she paired comfort food with the media that shaped her inner world: Taylor Swift eras, late-night rewatch shows, coming-of-age soundtracks, and pop culture that felt personal instead of universal.

She didn’t start it to grow an audience. She started it to document connections.

Meals inspired by comfort rewatches. Cooking tied to lyrics. Dishes that made sense if you felt the reference.

That instinct carried through everything she built next.

Today, Ari is primarily a TikTok creator. That’s where her recipes live first, where recognition happens, and where someone sees a dish, hears a song, and immediately knows if it’s for them.

The Cultural Context She Grew Up In

According to Ogilvy’s Fandom Flux report, 91% of 18- to 25-year-olds say “mainstream” pop culture no longer exists.

Instead, culture is driven by people constructing identity around the interests that matter most to them—music, film, fashion, sports, and the communities that form around those interests.

As Reid Litman, global consulting director at Ogilvy, put it:

“For Gen Z and Gen Alpha, fandom is a way to explore themselves, to connect with other people, to find belonging.”

This is the environment Ari learned to share inside.

She never assumed her content needed to appeal to everyone. She assumed it needed to resonate deeply with someone.

Ari doesn’t treat every channel the same way.

Lately, they tend to show up as unease more than curiosity. A recipe that once performed now disappears. Traffic that used to feel steady feels fragile. Platforms change the rules just after you’ve learned how to play by them.

It’s tempting to chase answers in tactics—new formats, new platforms, new posting schedules. But underneath all of that noise is a quieter, harder question that doesn’t always get said out loud:

What am I actually building—and where does it live?

This theme showed up everywhere for me over the last two weeks.

I was a little nervous speaking at CES.
But once the conversation started, it quickly turned into what I love most: listening, learning, and connecting dots.

Metadata is the information that tells people (and systems) what your content actually is. Not what it looks like. Not how hard you worked on it. But how it should be understood, grouped, found, and used again.

When you start thinking of your content as rich in metadata, something shifts.

You stop seeing a recipe as just a post.

You start seeing it as:

• a type of meal

• for a specific moment

• with a clear purpose

• that belongs with other things

That clarity changes how platforms read your work—but more importantly, it changes how people experience it.

So the next time you talk about your content, try using the word metadata.

Not to sound technical.
But to remind yourself that what you’re building isn’t just content. It’s information meant to travel.

When good work is hard to recognize

Owen didn’t call it metadata at first.

He lives in Madison, Wisconsin, and before he became a food blogger, he was a teacher—which shows in how he approaches food. His recipes are steady and considered, built around foraging and seasonal ingredients that appear briefly and disappear just as quickly.

Wild greens in early spring.
Mushrooms that only show up for a few weeks.
Dinners shaped by timing, place, and restraint.

His site, Weeknight Field Notes, is for people who want to cook thoughtfully without turning Tuesday night into a project.

Which is why the emails surprised him.

“Do you have a recipe for that lentil thing you shared last month?”
“I swear you posted a soup like this—can you resend the link?”
“I tried to find it but couldn’t.”

At first, Owen thought this was just how the internet works.

Then he realized something uncomfortable.

They weren’t missing his content.
They couldn’t recognize it.

Foraging recipes depend on context—season, location, moment. But once those details slipped out of view, readers remembered the idea of the dish without being able to locate it again.

Owen’s work was thoughtful, tested, and human.
But it wasn’t rich in metadata.

When he started treating his recipes as information—anchored to time, use, and relationship with other dishes—something changed.

Not his voice.
Not his values.
But how his work held together over time.

The misunderstanding about metadata

Metadata sounds technical.
Cold. Administrative. Optional.

Most creators hear the word and think:

• SEO cleanup

• backend busywork

• something to deal with “later”

Owen thought this too. His writing was clear. His recipes were solid. His audience liked him.

What he didn’t see was the gap between:

• content that makes sense when you land on it

• and content that’s easy to find again

That gap is where metadata lives.

The technical takeaway

Metadata is how you answer your audience’s unspoken questions before they ask them:

• What kind of recipe is this?

• When should I use it?

• Who is it for?

• How does it relate to what I’ve already seen?

Platforms rely on those answers.
But so do people.

When metadata is missing, your audience does more work than they should have to.

That’s not a platform problem.
It’s a clarity problem.

Why this is about generosity, not optimization

Here’s the shift Owen had to make:

Metadata isn’t about squeezing more performance out of content.
It’s about reducing friction for the reader.

When he:

• tightened recipe titles

• made categories consistent

• described techniques the same way every time

Something subtle changed.

The emails slowed down.
Not because people stopped caring.

Because they could finally find what they already trusted.

Metadata didn’t make his content louder.
It made it kinder.

Try this (10 minutes)

Pick one piece of content and ask:

• Would someone know who this is for in three seconds?

• Is it clear when they should use it?

• Does it connect clearly to related content?

If the answer is “sort of,” that’s your signal.

Metadata isn’t missing because you’re careless.
It’s missing because no one framed it as part of caring for your audience.

Instead of:

• “This post did well”

• “This video flopped”

• “I need to post more”

Try:

• “This recipe is seasonal”

• “This is a beginner weeknight dinner”

• “This answers a specific moment”

You don’t need to publish anything new.
Just practice naming what your content is.

That shift alone changes how you plan, group, and reuse what you already have.

The last time I hit send, it was November. Since then, I’ve been writing, consulting, testing, rebuilding systems, and paying close attention to how food content is actually behaving out in the world, not how we wish it behaved.

This is the place where food creators learn the tech behind discoverability and build content that lasts.

So consider this a quiet reset.

Not a “new year, new you” moment. I don’t really believe in resolutions.

Instead, I’m thinking about 3 questions as we start 2026:

• What am I keeping from 2025?

• What am I done doing?

• What am I finally ready to start?

This issue lives right at that intersection.

The News Nobody Wanted to Read

This week, Food52 filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

That sentence landed hard, not because Food52 failed to build an audience, but because it did almost everything we tell content brands to do:

• Build trust

• Invest in quality

• Create community

• Expand into commerce

And still, it wasn’t enough.

According to reporting from TheStreet and Adweek:

• Roughly 40% of Food52’s staff were laid off earlier this year

• The company entered court-supervised reorganization

• It had been exploring a sale for months

• It aimed for $60M in revenue in 2025, while remaining unprofitable

This isn’t a story about one bad decision.
It’s a story about how difficult it has become to turn content into something sustainable, especially when discovery no longer guarantees a visit.

Nearly 60% of Google searches now end without a click.
Another large share stays inside Google-owned properties.
Only a fraction ever reaches the open web.

People are still cooking. Still searching.Still consuming food content.

They’re just not clicking the way they used to.

A Measured Take (not doom)

If you’re a creator reading this and feeling uneasy, pause.

Food52’s situation isn’t proof that food content is over.
It’s evidence that the old assumptions about distribution are breaking.

Large, ad-driven content businesses are hit hardest because they depend on:

• traffic they don’t control

• monetization tied directly to clicks

• scale that’s expensive to maintain

Most individual creators aren’t operating at that scale—and that’s not a weakness.

Creators can adapt faster.
They can redesign structure without replatforming an entire company.
They can build content systems for the world we’re in now, not the one we miss.

The lesson isn’t “publish less.”
It’s “stop treating traffic as the finish line.”

What This Means for You

In a zero-click world, the question changes.

It’s no longer just:

“How do I get people to my site?”

It becomes:

• When my content shows up without me, does it still make sense?

• If a platform summarizes my work, is it pulling the right information?

• When someone comes back weeks later, can they recognize what they’re looking for?

This is where structure starts to matter more than reach.

And this is where creators like Nelly come in.

New Year with Nelly

Nelly lives in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Her family is Diné (Navajo), and food has always been how knowledge moved through generations—hands showing hands, stories told while something simmered, techniques passed down without names or measurements.

She grew up learning how to:

• stretch ingredients

• cook with what’s available

• respect time, heat, and patience

Nelly’s a zillennial, balancing tradition with tech.

Her dinners are practical, joyful, and deeply rooted:

• blue corn tortillas turned into weeknight tacos

• slow-simmered beans reworked into 20-minute meals

• ancestral techniques adapted for modern kitchens

Her blog is called Nelly Dine Kitchen.

Her main platform?
YouTube Shorts.

That’s where her audience lives. That’s where she teaches. That’s where her recipes move.

And for a while, it worked.

The moment everything stalled

Nelly didn’t lose motivation.
She didn’t stop posting.
She didn’t “fall off.”

What changed was subtler.

Her videos kept performing… inconsistently.
Some shorts took off. Others vanished.
People commented things like “Why doesn’t this show up when I search?”

She felt it in her body before she could name it:

“I’m doing everything right. Why does it feel like I’m starting over every time?”

That’s when she ran into the hidden problem in food content.

The Hidden Problem

Most food content doesn’t fail loudly. It fades quietly.

Creators are taught to optimize outputs:

• better hooks

• more video

• more platforms

But very few are taught to build structure underneath the content they’re already making.

Nelly’s recipes weren’t invisible because they lacked soul. They were invisible because platforms couldn’t recognize them as part of something bigger.

Each recipe lived alone.

There were no clear connections.
No consistent signals.

• What will you keep doing from 2025?

Write the answers down.

How personal is too personal?

   Use stories to frame the why, not to fill space.

2. Keep stories in a consistent place.
   Add a “Behind the Recipe” or “Creator Notes” section so humans—and crawlers—recognize your voice.

3. Label authorship clearly.

What I Learned Running Blueberri This Year

1. Structure isn’t just a strategy — it’s a stabilizer.

Every time I tightened a workflow, mapped metadata, or clarified a system, the business got lighter. Not easier — lighter. Systems don’t remove the work, but they make the work move.

2. Creators want actionable insights more than trends.

When you strip away the noise, creators are trying to answer the same questions:
How do I stay visible? How do I stay myself? How do I make this sustainable?
Structured content gives them a way to do all three.

3. The food-tech world is expanding faster than anyone expected.

This year made one thing obvious: recipes now live far beyond blogs. Platforms, partnerships, AI models, apps — everyone is hungry for structured, usable content. It’s not “future thinking” anymore. It’s here.

4. Content engineering belongs in the creator conversation.

For years, creators were told to “just keep posting.”
Now they’re realizing they need models, metadata, systems, schemas, governance — the vocabulary of content engineering.
Blueberri became the bridge.

5. Community > algorithms.

The most impactful moments didn’t come from traffic spikes.
They came from emails, DMs, conversations, people saying:

A few years ago, ranking on page one of Google meant visibility. Creators fought for clicks, optimized their headlines, and learned how to speak in keywords. But today’s search results are being replaced by something entirely different: generative engines.

These systems, like ChatGPT, Google’s AI Overviews, and Perplexity, don’t just list links. They generate answers. They summarize information, weave together insights, and deliver context in a few sentences that never require a click.

That shift is quietly rewriting the rules of discoverability.

Where SEO once focused on what people typed, GEO—Generative Engine Optimization—focuses on what engines understand.

Generative engines aren’t scanning for perfect keywords. They’re looking for structured data, contextual clarity, and trustworthy signals that help them decide:

• Who created this content?

• How credible is it?

• What relationships exist between pieces of information?

And that’s where most creators are getting left behind.

If your content isn’t structured, if it doesn’t have clean metadata, clear authorship, or internal relationships, it can be used without attribution.
Your ideas might show up inside someone else’s AI-generated answer, stripped of your name, your link, and your hard-earned visibility.

That’s why GEO matters. It’s not another algorithm to chase, it’s a call to clarity.

When Minh opened LinkedIn for the first time, he wasn’t looking for a job, he was looking for a seat at the table.

After years of posting recipe videos and brand collabs on Instagram, Minh realized that most of the decision-makers behind the partnerships he wanted weren’t scrolling Reels at midnight. They were on LinkedIn at 10 a.m., reading about how AI is reshaping food content.

So Minh treated his profile like a homepage.
He swapped the selfie banner for a clean kitchen-studio photo.
He rewrote the headline:

“Recipe developer | Food-tech collaborator | Helping brands connect flavor and function.”

In his About section, he stopped telling a story about himself and started writing for the people he wanted to meet. He followed food-tech startups, ingredient brands, and sustainability initiatives he genuinely admired. Within a week, his comments started sparking DMs, and one of those turned into a product-testing partnership.

That’s the shift: Minh stopped acting like “just a creator” and started operating like a business.

So what?

The Shift No One Was Ready For

Every conference I attended in 2025, the same frustration kept surfacing.
Creators were doing everything right, yet their traffic graphs looked like ski slopes.

The reason?
Search itself is changing.

Google’s AI Overviews now answer questions directly in search results, pulling from structured data instead of headlines.
Pinterest Assistant interprets user intent, “quick vegetarian dinner under $20” — and returns curated, shoppable results that blend recipes, products, and lifestyle content.

Search isn’t about keywords anymore, it’s about context and structure.
And for most bloggers, that means rebuilding the foundation.

Marisol and the Salt & Sazón Reset

Marisol’s food blog, Salt & Sazón, is the kind of site that built the early web: rich storytelling, beautiful photography, and loyal readers who still email her for her grandmother’s arroz con gandules recipe every Christmas.

But in early 2025, her traffic collapsed.

She hadn’t changed anything — and that was the problem.
When she began reviewing her content, the issue became clear:

• Her recipes had schema, but not the right schema.

• Images were too small for Google Discover.

• Ingredients were listed as plain text, not structured data.

• Categories like “Easy Dinners” and “Family Meals” overlapped but weren’t defined semantically.

• Affiliate links had no structured product data connecting them.

In 2019, that setup was fine.
In 2026, it’s invisible.

Platforms like Google and Pinterest now use metadata context to decide which recipes appear in overviews, summaries, and shopping flows.
If your structure doesn’t explain your content, it doesn’t exist.

So, Marisol rebuilt.

She updated her recipe schema with nutrition info, meal type, and “suitable for diet” tags.

She added descriptive alt text, 1200×1200 featured images, and cleaned up her categories, “Dinner,” “One-Pot Meals,” “Puerto Rican Classics.”

She stopped optimizing for keywords and started optimizing for intent, grouping content into cooking journeys like weeknight dinners, pantry-based meals, and holiday traditions.

Then she integrated her monetization data.
Her affiliate links were restructured with product schema, and she linked cookware recommendations directly to her recipes.

Within eight weeks, Salt & Sazón began to reappear, first in Pinterest searches, then in AI Overviews.
Her Weeknight Mofongo Bowls recipe even ranked as a top result for “budget-friendly dinner under $15” and appeared in Pinterest’s new shoppable feed.

Traffic didn’t “bounce back.”
It evolved.
Marisol’s visibility now stretches across platforms, her recipes discovered not just on her site, but wherever structured content lives.

  People will “ask” for meals, not “search” for them.

• Linked data beats backlinks.
  Contextual relationships will matter more than inbound links.

• Creators who embrace metadata gain reach without burnout.
  Structure replaces hustle.

What It Means for You

If you run a food blog, this is the moment to:

• Audit your schema and taxonomy. Make sure your recipe structure fully describes your content.

• Refresh your visual metadata. Use large, descriptive images (1200×1200 px or more).

• Integrate product markup early. Pinterest Assistant and Google Shopping read the same fields.

• Re-map content to user intent. Think in journeys, not keywords — what problem does each recipe solve?

You don’t need to predict every algorithm change.
You just need to make your content understandable to both humans and machines.

This has been my mantra for the last five weeks during Sprintapalooza, a writing challenge that’s part of a 14-week workshop led by AJ Harper and the T3 author community. Every weekday, four one-hour sprints, one after another, I showed up in my yellow hoodie.

Working from home, context-switching is real. Between laundry and emails, your brain needs cues to say now, we write.
For me, that cue is my hoodie. Yellow is actually my favorite color. I know you thought it was blue! But my hoodie somehow activates my writing brain and is the easies thing to throw on when it’s time to write. Somewhere along the way, everytime I joined a writing sprint, it became a thing.

We’re all writing different books, but we’re all doing the same hard thing: showing up, word after word.

As of today, my manuscript for Create Once, Share Everywhere sits at 66 ,896 words and I’m on track to finish the book proposal by November 1.

Meet Eric, the future of agentic AI

Eric lives in Austin, Texas, and runs Meals on a Budget, a blog that started in 2025 with one mission: helping people on SNAP cook well without spending much.

By 2030, his structured recipes power shopping lists, meal plans, and grocery bundles across multiple platforms. He didn’t chase virality; he built a foundation.

When agentic AI tools matured, his content was ready.

• A grocery AI surfaced his recipes for “meals under $5.”

• Walmart’s AI-powered ChatGPT integration suggested his sheet-pan dinners for family meal plans.

Meet Zoe, the ethical experimenter

Zoe runs Whisk & Wander, a food-travel blog that pairs recipes with cultural storytelling. She’s creative, strategic, and a little allergic to inefficiency.

You might remember Lila, the Hawaiian-Korean baker behind Butter & Banyan. Her guava mochi recipes kept readers coming back, and for a while, ads covered her bills. Each month, the RPMs looked steady enough to breathe a sigh of relief.

But then things started slipping.

It’s half technical workshop, half support group. And at the center of it is our guide, AJ Harper. She repeats one line so often it’s burned into my brain:

“A book is not about something, it’s for someone.”

It sounds simple, but it changes everything. That’s why we’re here — to remember that what we’re writing matters, because it’s for someone who needs it.

Getting here, though, wasn’t part of some grand plan. Honestly, it happened by chance. I used to feel weird saying I wanted to write a book. Embarrassed, even. Like I was just waiting for someone to tell me it was a bad idea, too much work, unrealistic. Sometimes people did.

But one person didn’t. They told me: “You should look up AJ Harper.”

So I did.

And doing what I always do, I went straight to LinkedIn. I saw that AJ helped authors write prescriptive non-fiction — exactly the kind of book I wanted to write. I found her book, Write a Must-Read, saw it was under twenty bucks, and clicked purchase. But more than that, I wanted to follow her. So I sent a connection request. She accepted right away.

I sent her a thank-you message (always send a message!) and gushed about how excited I was to read her book. I admitted I had no real plan, but I promised her I’d read it and work hard to apply everything in it.

And then she wrote back.

She asked:
“What is the change you want to see in the world through your book?”

That was the day I stopped just talking about maybe writing a book, and started actually doing it.

Fast forward to this week’s workshop, where AJ asked us to draw a timeline that would answer two deceptively simple questions:

• How do you know what you know?

• When did you learn it?

Like every new exercise, I felt instant panic. My brain went blank. Where do you even start with something like that?

“Start anywhere,” AJ said.

So I did. I put a line in the middle of the page and scribbled, “1st Panasonic project w/ blogger.” Then another line farther left: “Became a manager.” Then I skipped all the way to the right and wrote: “I am a content engineer.”

And that was it. Suddenly, the memories came rushing back, faster than I could keep up with. My poor bullet journal got stuffed with crooked lines, arrows, and moments like:

• First recipe goal: 2,000 recipes

• Building an ingredient database and shopping list

• Launching a new app

• Writing a recipe style guide

• Leading a content engineering team

• Localizing recipes in German and UK English

• Hitting 20,000 recipes and realizing, wait a second, this is a whole career

Oh crap. I’m running out of ink.

At first, I thought this was just a way to surface book material. But halfway through I realized it wasn’t just about the book. It was about me. About reminding myself that I should be writing this because I know this first-hand. The timeline wasn’t just a brainstorm; it was a confidence boost.

And here’s where it ties back to this: your content is an asset.

My timeline proved that every recipe, every database, every style guide, every localization project wasn’t just “work.” They were assets that built toward something bigger. Together, they created credibility, expertise, and the foundation for what I’m writing now.

That’s also the heart of COSE. Structured content transforms scattered posts into an asset library, something you can repurpose, scale, and monetize. It’s your way of drawing the same kind of line I did in my notebook and realizing: Oh, this isn’t random. This is my body of work.

Full transparency: WordPress drives me nuts. I don’t use it. And honestly, I couldn’t figure out why anyone would. With so many publishing options out there, Squarespace, Substack, Ghost, and more, why did food bloggers all seem to stay loyal to WordPress?

Or maybe the better question is: are there really that many options?

I chose to take a closer look.

Lena, Marco, and Nova

Lena sat at her desk staring at the blinking notification on her WordPress dashboard. Another plugin update. She clicked, held her breath, and prayed the site wouldn’t break. It did—again. A recipe card vanished, the site speed tanked, and Lena groaned.

She didn’t start blogging to become a part-time IT manager. She just wanted to share her grandmother’s soup recipe.

If you’ve been in the food blogging world long enough, you know a Lena. Maybe you are Lena. WordPress is the house most creators live in—reliable, customizable, and full of potential. But like any house, it requires constant upkeep.

And lately, some creators are wondering: what if I moved into a smaller, easier-to-manage place down the street?

Why everyone ended up on WordPress

WordPress didn’t just stumble into dominance, it built an ecosystem that food bloggers couldn’t live without.

• Recipe plugins + schema: Tools like WP Tasty, WP Recipe Maker, and Feast gave food bloggers superpowers. Google, Pinterest, and apps could actually read and display recipes.

• Monetization: Ad networks like Mediavine and Raptive were built for WordPress. If you wanted ad revenue, you were here.

• Community momentum: When everyone else is using WordPress, tutorials, support groups, and workflows naturally spring up around it.

• Control: With hosting, design, and plugins in your hands, you own your content and can build any business model you want.

Lena loves these parts. Her site has paid the bills, and she’s proud of what she’s built. But each time another plugin update derails her weekend, she wonders if it’s worth it.

Enter the alternatives

Not everyone wants to be Lena.

Marco, the community builder

Marco never cared much about Google rankings. He wanted a direct line to his readers. Substack felt like a breath of fresh air. No plugins. No hosting headaches. He hit publish, and his newsletter landed in inboxes minutes later.

He didn’t need SEO to pay his bills; his readers subscribed for $8 a month. Substack gave him simplicity and sustainability.

But when Marco tried to share recipes, he hit a wall. No recipe schema. No search visibility. Substack wasn’t designed for food discoverability; it was designed for community.

Nova, the tinkerer

Nova wasn’t scared of tech. She loved playing with design, experimenting with memberships, and keeping things lightweight. For her, Ghost was the perfect fit, sleek, open source, and subscription-ready without WordPress bloat.

Still, she felt like she was swimming upstream. The food blogging tools she needed weren’t there. Ghost was powerful, but not food-specific.

Why WordPress still holds the crown

Other platforms are growing fast, but none have solved the food creator problem.

• Squarespace and Wix: Easy to set up, but lack real recipe functionality.

• Medium: Built an audience, but never specialized for recipes.

• Substack and Ghost: Strong for community and subscriptions, but still don’t speak the structured language of food blogging (schema, recipe cards, integrations with ad networks).

WordPress, for all its flaws, remains the only place where everything works together—recipes, SEO, ads, affiliates, and a well-worn path to monetization. Sigh.

So what does it all mean?

Lena sticks with WordPress, because it’s the only place she can keep her traffic and ad revenue flowing.
Marco thrives on Substack, where his subscribers—not search engines—fund his work.
Nova builds on Ghost, carving her own hybrid path.

None of them are wrong. Each platform reflects a different kind of creator:

• WordPress for the SEO-driven, ad-monetized blogger.

• Substack for the subscription-first community builder.

• Ghost for the creator who wants flexibility without bloat.

So maybe the real question isn’t why WordPress still dominates but rather: what kind of creator do you want to be?

Because the platform you choose isn’t just tech—it’s a business model, a workflow, and a lifestyle.

I’m just as obsessed with the artistry of a Michelin-star chef as I am with a home cook experimenting in their kitchen. Both take rhythm, layering, and creativity. That’s why this issue mixes all of it together, with a tech twist. You know how I do.

For a moment, it felt like maybe food blogging would take off.

But the glow faded quickly. His traffic flatlined after the initial clicks from friends. Google buried his recipes under pages of simpler ones. Pinterest sent him nowhere. TikTok showed him a handful of views before the algorithm moved on.

The frustration built. He’d pour hours into plating dishes, styling photos, even editing clips that matched his playlists, only to get silence back. “Maybe my food just isn’t good enough”. He started second-guessing the point of blogging at all.

The “aha” came one late night, scrolling through Google after his set. He noticed another creator’s recipe, something as basic as “Quick 3-Ingredient Avocado Toast” sitting at the top of the search carousel. The difference? Their recipe had a thumbnail, ratings, cook time, and step-by-step instructions all neatly displayed. His didn’t.

That’s when Tyler looked deeper. He realized the problem wasn’t the cooking, it was the metadata.

• Blog titles were vague (“Something New I Tried”).

• Images had no alt text.

• Categories and tags were inconsistent.

• Recipe plugin fields sat half-empty.

To platforms, his inventive recipes looked like static. There was no rhythm, no clear signal. They couldn’t tell what the content was or who it was for.

Filling in the blanks

Tyler didn’t overhaul everything at once. He started small, picking one recipe to experiment with: his avocado foam tacos.

Instead of leaving fields blank, he filled in every detail his plugin asked for:

• Title: Avocado Foam Tacos with Chile-Lime Dust

• Prep time: 25 minutes

• Cuisine: Fusion

• Categories: Tacos, Modernist Cooking

• Tags: Molecular gastronomy, Avocado, San Diego food

It felt tedious at first, like organizing cables after a set. But within a several weeks, impressions on Google were up. His tacos finally had a thumbnail in search. Pinterest started recommending his pin to people looking for “fusion recipes.”

It wasn’t a viral moment. It was a crack in the silence, proof that platforms were finally hearing his signal. A beacon of hope.

Finding the framework

Once he saw that first spark, Tyler went deeper and applied the frameworks I talk about here (and will be talking about more):

• Create Once, Share Everywhere™
  He stopped treating recipes as one-off posts and started treating them as reusable assets. For his tacos, he built a structured draft in his CMS that could break into pieces: a short TikTok clip of the foam process, a Pinterest pin of the plated dish, an Instagram carousel with behind-the-scenes shots, and the full recipe on his site. Each version linked back to the original post, creating multiple entry points.

• Structured fields matter
  He worked through his entire plugin, not just prep time and categories, but cook time, servings, cuisine tags, and every other field that helped platforms understand his recipes.

• Metadata as amplifier
  Clear, descriptive titles replaced vague ones. Alt text made images searchable. Suddenly, his blog wasn’t noise, it was a strong, consistent signal.

The remix pays off

Within a year, the shift was obvious. Tyler wasn’t just online, he was everywhere:

• His avocado foam tacos appeared in Google recipe carousels.

• Pinterest recommended his boards to users searching for “fusion recipes.”

• TikTok categorized his content under trending food tags, putting him next to creators he admired.

• A smart kitchen app pulled his recipe into its “weeknight fusion” meal plan, introducing it and The Remix Kitchen to thousands of home cooks.

• A food tech brand reached out about testing their new ingredient kit, ecstatic at how easy it was to integrate his structured recipe. That collaboration turned into his first paid partnership.

Tyler didn’t change the recipes. He changed the structure. The metadata gave his content rhythm, one that search engines, social feeds, apps, and even brands could finally dance to. And once platforms could read it, it became something else too: monetizable.

Half of publishers and site owners report traffic drops from Google’s AI Overviews—AI summaries that answer queries without requiring clicks. Media execs call this the “Google Zero” effect.

50% of publishers and website owners have seen a drop in visits thanks to AI Overviews. Google argues those visits are “higher quality,” but publishers are bracing for a future less dependent on referrals and more reliant on owned audiences.

Perplexity announced a new Comet Plus subscription ($5/month), promising to share 80% of proceeds with publishers whose content appears in AI searches. Publishers will earn when their articles generate traffic in Comet, appear in searches, or are included in AI tasks.

Why it matters: It’s one of the first models to acknowledge that content is now consumed by AI agents as much as humans. But splitting $42.5M across publishers could amount to pennies, hardly replacing the traffic losses many already face. Still, it sets a precedent food bloggers should watch as AI search reshapes discoverability.

Recipe schema

Recipe schema is a type of metadata that tells search engines exactly what’s in your recipe, things like ingredients, prep and cook times, nutrition info, and ratings.

Why it matters: if those fields are left blank in your CMS or plugin, your recipe may not qualify for rich results like carousels or star ratings in Google. That means fewer clicks, less visibility, and less revenue.

Recipe schema is how platforms read your recipe. Fill it out, and you give them a reason to show your work.
